Writing this piece was my first time working with a traditional brass band.  What a thrill to have so many brass instruments to work with - 4 tubas!  Need I say more?

This is a very demanding piece for brass, and intentionally so, as the HSSB is a powerhouse group, whose commissions are well into the 70's.  Like the other works in my series of variation titled works, there is a central theme that is stated at the beginning, and then is reiterated numerous times throughout, exploring textures and rhythms, and the potential for a simple thematic idea to be the seed for a large scale work.

The movements run concurrently.
